I didn't have a camera, so no pictures from me, but I can tell you a few things ...

I introduced Pixietoes to the Lascivious Biddies and the wonders of One Meat Ball. I invite you all to go hence and make purchases.

I fended off the advances of a near-senior-citizen who twice assailed my virtue and was twice rebuffed (NOT a briner).

Friday night, I had quail stuffed with wild game mousseline and foie gras that was transportingly good.

Vickatina's daughters are pretty much the coolest short people I know.

Don't believe anything Slammer tells you about Pixie and me. We're just friends.

I still question how a place that has exactly two beers on tap can call itself a proper Bavarian inn.

Watching the hawks wheel over the Potomac from my balcony just after dawn on Sunday was one of the greatest moments of solitude I've ever had.

Kittyfixer is my soul sister. The number of common experiences we've got, having lived in Houston at about the same time, is truly scary. If I had a sick critter, there is no one I'd trust more to care for it. When she talks about anything to do with animals, she exudes a confidence and compassion that are unmistakable and tremendously impressive.

The garlic fries at Sheetz kick arse.

More as it pops to mind!

You've heard most of the story already. 5 of us gathered at the Bavarian
Inn on Friday afternoon. We had hors d'oeuvre and Champagne in the
Presidential Suite, courtesy of Slamdunkpro and Kittyfixer. Then moved
to the dining room.

Image

I am not attempting to show everything we had to eat. I didn't get pictures
of everything, and you've already seen some of it. Here's a few more.

Bavarian Sausage Sampler: A sampling of Weisswurst, Knockwurst, and Bratwurst

Image

Seafood “Trio”: Smoked Salmon with Citrus Crème Fraiche, Smoked Trout
over Corn and Truffle Pudding, & Seared Scallop with Melon and Mint Salsa

Image

Quails stuffed with Game Mousseline and Foie Gras, Pistachio Pesto
Herbed Spaetzle and Seared Foie Gras with Huckleberry Gastrique

Image

Tenderloin Tips “Stroganoff Style”: w/ German Spaetzle, Mushroom Cream
and Roasted Baby Beets

Image

I think this was called Peanut Butter Pie, the dessert menu changes daily,
so they don't print it. I have to try to recall what the very cute server said.

Image

This is the original dining room, where we ate the first night. On Saturday,
we had a private dining room, that can be seen in Pixie's pixtures, after
another cocktail party in the Presidential Suite.

Image

“European” Shrimp Cocktail: Four Jumbo Shrimp with Traditional Cognac
Dressing & Chopped Romaine

Image

Bavarian Sauerbraten: Beef Roast marinated in Vinegar and Spice Red Wine
Ginger Sauce, Potato Dumpling and Red Cabbage

Image

I'm pretty sure those are scallops, but otherwise, I haven't a clue what this is.

Image

Famous Lump Crab Cakes w/ Kaese Spaetzle and Asparagus
Spears Hollandaise

...but they were out of asparagus! :x Aren't the lemon wedge booties cute?

Image

Pork Tenderloin in a Sweet Potato and Honey Crust Turmeric scented
Vegetables and Spaetzle, Red Wine and Morel Sauce

Mongo said the pork was over cooked, but he likes his pork medium rare :?

Image

Wiener Schnitzel: Classic Vienna Veal Steak lightly breaded with
Red Cabbage and Spaetzle

Image

Pastry with raspberries

Image

I'm fairly certain that is Cheese Cake.

Image

This is the main dining room. We never actually ate in there, but you can
see the "Hausses" where some of us stayed, thru the windows.

Image

Generally the food was good, but hardly world class. The rooms were
pretty nice, with a few oddities like a TV that couldn't be seen from the
couch and a shower that was so small you couldn't adjust the temperature
without standing in the stream. SDP thought the "Presidential Suite"
was small for the title... really just one room with a fireplace in the middle.

Mysteries remain: why did they send Eric's and Vicky's groups to join us,
but not Meg's, and why when someone called from Seattle on March 25
did they cancel SDP's reservation? That call may raise other questions. :?:
And their website is weird. :? Using the same link, when I go there from
home I reach their current content, but from work, I get last year's menus
and a different home page.

Shepherdstown and Sharpsburg (across the river), are quaint, very well
maintained mid 19th century towns, that don't look much different than
they did when Gen. Lee brought his army thru here in 1862. There is a
C & O canal lock that we could see from our rooms, and a bit farther up
the road is the Antietam Battle Field. Unfortunately, I can't currently read
the memory chip with those pictures. :x

That was Friday night. SDP had dragged me out of the Rathskeller, where I'd already had two Octoberfest Spatens and a shot of Dalwhinnie straight. I don't remember some of that ...

SDP is VERY persuasive and while there might have been some arm twisting going on that I wasn't privy to, it wasn't about convincing Mongo to come to dinner. :D

Just so's ya know..

I had SDP's cell phone number. When I arrived, I texted his phone..he came out of the presidential suite and waved to me.

The staff never knew I arrived separately.

Hmmm. We do this right, and maybe we can all share a room next time.

Since I'm always warm, I will make the supreme sacrifice of keeping the girls' room warm.

Like so many of our discussions, it's a semantic distinction, depending on
the definition of "bigger". You might be a smidgeon taller, but overall,
I believe Mongo is slightly more HUGE.

I wanted to finish the story. Finally squeezed these images from a cranky
memory card. This is sunrise across the Potomac from my room at the Inn.

Image

This is the old mansion house, where all of the dining rooms are located

Image

Some of our rooms were in the river view hauses

Image

This is the view from across the river. The Presidential Suite is on the top
floor of the haus on the left. I was 3rd floor center center.

Image

This is taken from the same spot as the picture above. It's a lock of the
Chesapeake and Ohio Canal

Wiki wrote:The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, ...operated from 1836 until 1924
parallel to the Potomac River in Maryland from Cumberland, Maryland to
Washington, DC. The total length of the canal is about 184.5 miles. The
elevation change of 605 ft (185 m) was accommodated with 74 canal locks...
The canal way is now maintained as a park, with a linear trail following
the old towpath, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park

Image

As I said before, Sharpsburg doesn't look like it's changed much since

Image

Image

General Lee brought the Army of Northern Virginia across the river in 1862.

Image

Image

It's spring! :D
