Kinz, I've recently become aware of a couple of friends who have had problems with people they know and have had to remove pics of themselves from the net. Because of that, I'm now at a point where I'm anxious about posting pictures I don't have explicit permission to post.

Just wanted to share.

Since I don't have a digital camera, the most recent pic I have of myself on my computer is one of me and some guy I met at a bookstore. I was looking for a cookbook, and this guy seemed pretty special..He's got some CRAZY fans!

Can anyone tell me who he is?

Not that anyone here knows him, but every time I scroll past your picture, I think "what is Charles doing here?!" You look a LOT like one of my best friends.

That would be Charles on the far right. . .

also gives you a more current pic of me (damn stress; I've gained a little weight back)

There have been cases where, for instance, a wife escaping an abusive relationship, have been found by the abuser because a well meaning organization/person posted a group picture. Same has happened with children.

I certainly do understand, in the abstract, how pictures on the internet
could allow to someone who wished to remain annonymous to be found,
if there was a real name, or reference to an organization with predictable
meetings, but...

That's not the situation here. I still don't understand how a picture,
identified only by a screen name, of an event months or years ago,
could be used to make such a connection. Those pictures have all been
there for months, if there is potential damage, it's already been done.
Deleting pictures now can't possibly matter.

The question is here whether your lack of understanding is enough to warrant your refusal to remove the pictures as requested. Just because you can't understand why someone has made a request or their reasoning for it, does not disqualify it as a valid request. We all all operate, on an almost daily basis, on knowledge we are not privy to. You don't have to understand how an airplane works to fly in it. you don't have to understand a doctors diagnosis to take the medicine.

Some people have different comfort levels when it comes to interpersonal relationships. There are enough horror stories about stalkings and violence on the internet to justify a little caution. Up until the first BinD, nobody on this board knew my real name. There's a reason my online moniker is "Parintachin" and not "Bryan". I still get nervous about handing out my personal info.

The other factor is the unnamed one. There may be reasons that are to private or personal to allow for explanation. Generally, in matters of privileged information, I would err on the caution with the assumption that a friend would not ask for such a thing without good reason and that as a friend, I perhaps do not need to know that reason. I only have to have a little faith that the request isn't meaningless.

It doesn't really matter why someone doesn't want their picture on the internet, it is very poor form to post anyone's picture or name or really anything identifying without their permission. Just as it's rude to use their real first name in a forum when you haven't been told you could, even if you do know it for some reason.

I have deleted the 6 or 7 pictures of you as you requested,
going back to BinD2.

I suppose it would be petty of me to mention that there are still more
than a dozen pictures of you in various threads, hosted by other people,
and posted by other people.

I will take no more pictures of Briners, ever.
I'll stick to food, architecture and scenery.
If anyone else wants me to delete
pictures that I've posted of you, let me know.

I may not get to it immediately.
