I have a quick question for everybody. I will be coming with +2, my best friend and his girlfriend. She would like to know, and I know how odd this sounds with this being a BBQ, if there will be vegetarian side dishes. EX: Potato salad without bacon, chip & dip without beef, etc. A crime to some of us, but that's her thing and she's really cool about it and doesn't proselytize. :) Just wanted to confirm that before she came all the way down on an empty stomach with nothing but smoky delicious death waiting for her. :) If that's not the case, then don't worry about it, she doesn't want anybody butchering (lol pun) their favorite recipes on her account.

The only side I'm doing is cole slaw - I'm going to get some corn if there is any to be had and it's not too wormy.

I'm bringing Mac-n-cheese. It won't be vegan, but it won't have hunks of meat in it.

Looking at what others are bringing, I'm going to skip another dessert.

Sorry...just back from a two week trip and two days of offsite training (I am now scrum certified, however useful that is). Wish I could, but I will most likely be prepping break fast to be ready for Yom Kippur on Sunday/Monday. If I'm heading up to Baltimore at the right time and am not on the train, I'll try to drive a bit further to stop in and say hi.

Beans are soaking.

Wonder if I can run a crock pot off an inverter in the Miata. Does being distracted by the aroma of beans while driving count as DUI?

Well, I just got home & didn't bring camera. Those who did either had a longer trip home than I did or kids to put to bed or both. But pics were taken & should be up soon. It was a wonderful day. The rain stopped just in time. Slam was already carving brisket when I got there. It was great to see Bubbles_Meg, Missimessi, Rockford 10, Vickatina & the Mini-Vic Pit Slaves, Babylon 1023, & EricE again, as well as children & guests. There were ample sides & desserts, and of course, MEAT! Slam is surely the Pit Master, & generously gave everyone a trough of leftovers to take home. Thans to Slam & his gracious parents for a glorious afternoon.

I dunno about better pictures, but I have different pictures. For example I didn't get the sides you did - was too busy talking

First, here is how you finish beans that you started way to late in the morning - you let them cook while you drive:

Image

It could be a new series - "Cooking on the Go"...

I put the crock in a pan in case it spilled - I can get "spirited" in my driving in the Miata :) The same with it in the cardboard box - just being over-protective. To the right you can see the inverter - it's a 400 watt model. The beige thing plugged into the inverter is a Kill a Watt meter - on low the crock only draws about 230 watts, well within my safety margin. Conveniently the battery for the Miata is in the trunk so it was easy to hook up the inverter. It seems the Miata trunk is ideal for cooking while on the go 8)

The only problem? The car smells like beans now - not really sure how much of a "problem" that really is - lol. Everyone seemed to agree they were a good batch of AB's beans (and I hope they all weren't just being kind). I made a double batch, and other then adding a couple of home grown ancho chilies to the four home grown jalapeno's (double batch, remember?) I put an extra two ounces of tomato paste in. Mainly because it comes in six ounce cans, the recipe called for four and I didn't want to deal with left overs. I got up later then I intended to get them started this morning so they really didn't get started until 7. Put 'em on high in a crock I had pre-heated with water. Moved them to the trunk on low about 1 PM where they continued cooking until I arrived around 3 PM :)

Much like AB's chili, this is another recipe I prefer low and slow in the crock pot. I think the longer cooking time really brings the flavors together.

I'll post the few other photo's I have next...

We hit the lotto - It rained all day Saturday, it POURED all night Saturday and back to rain Sunday morning. We waited until 12:15 to decide whether to set up inside or outside. My Mom & Dad pitched in since the wife called earlier in the morning to let me know she was sick and not coming. At 12:15 it was like someone threw a switch; the rain stopped and the sun started to peek out. By the time people started showing up, the patio was dry and a beautiful afternoon was forming. It was a great seeing everyone again and having a chance to just sit and yak for a while. Eric, I loved the "bean-mobile", and Meg , the cake was great. Thanks to all for coming!
