Ironic comments about Congress being paid during shutdown

Postby Nitro » Wed Oct 02, 2013 8:21 pm

I've heard comments that the founding fathers would be rolling over in their graves if they knew Congress was getting paid during the shutdown. I find this hilarious.

Maybe it's a little known fact, but it is in the Constitution that their pay cannot be changed (27th Amendment), and I think it would at least be against the spirit of the amendment to allow back pay.

Most proposed amendments now have a time limit, this one didn't. This particular amendment was presented to Congress along with 11 others, the first two were not ratifiied (until the second was in 1992 as the 27th). The final 10 or the 12? They are the Bill of Rights. What is keeping Congress paid was presented by James Madison, the Father of the Constitution.

We all know the politicians are well taken care of. I would've done the same, self-preservation and all.

many are refusing pay. Hey, it's a gesture.

There was a story in the AJC yesterday about some local Congressmen not taking their pay during the shutdown. Another Congressman made what is probably the worst PR move when he said "A spokesman for Democratic Rep. Sanford Bishop of Albany said the congressman “is working to end this government shutdown, so he has decided to keep his paycheck.”

It made me laugh.

Congress' official pay is just pocket change to those people, they'd
hardly notice if it stopped. They make some much on the side...
Why do you think they work so hard and endure so much to be
re-elected? It ain't for a couple hundred thou. For most of them,
serving in Congress is just a way to make contacts, so they can
become lobbyists and earn big bucks.

I just want them to do their job and get this childish mess over. I plan to offer prayers of hope that this will awaken some folks to the idiocy of the Tea Partiers.

TJ The only reason the government is shut down right now is that Democrats refuse to fund the government if they are required to live under Obamacare.

I have figured out the problem - all of the republicans have been sucked into a parallel fantasy world.

An alternate universe, yes.

Slam, I thought it was the Republicans who did not care for Obamacare and that the Democrats do not mind it. At any rate, it seems that we should be able to resolve differences without ruining our already fragile economy and stressing that of the rest of the world. Let's hope it works out.

The house just offered a clean CR (the Senate version) with one amendment - The Obama's, Biden's and the cabinet members would be required to participate in Obamacare. It was flatly rejected.

Oh and as far as "defaulting" the Treasury takes in around $250 million per month and the debt payment is around $35 million per month. So unless Obama goes against the Constitution and instructs the Treasury not to pay there will be no default.

Do you have a source for that? I'm not seeing much on it. I mean, there's this, but that hardly seems as clear-cut as what you suggested.
