How To Get Banned

Postby The Admins » Tue Apr 07, 2009 6:21 am

One of the first questions that always comes up when someone joins a new forum is "So, what are the rules?"

Here at the GEFP, we like to keep it simple. We have one rule:

DON'T BE A TROLL.

What is a troll, you ask? I'm glad you did! Herewith, a definition of what actions make you a troll in the GEFP world:

1. Threatening a fellow board member with real-world harm of ANY kind. (Note: This is one of two violations that will get you banned IMMEDIATELY, without warnings, given a majority vote of the Admins.)

2. Spamming the board. If you've got a widget to sell, by all means put a link to your Web site in your signature. Hawk your wares in every forum and clog up our board with your pitches and you're gone. (This is the other insta-ban offense.)

3. Harassing a fellow board member. Here we bring in the "last 20 posts" test. If your last 20 posts consist primarily of ones targeted at a specific member with the intention of hounding, harassing or otherwise harshing the mellow of that member, you are being a troll.

4. Uncontrolled snarking. If your last 20 posts consist of little other than jabs at other members, snide comments, eye-roll smilies ( ) or other rude behavior, you are being a troll. We all have snarky things to say from time to time, and this is by NO means meant to put the kibosh on that. Snarking is a gods-given right, and we support that right fully. But if you make it your calling in life, you'll soon be invited to do so elsewhere.

5. Profanity. We all let the occasional expletive slip in our written conversation. Most of us here are adults, and such occasional utterances are a normal part of adult conversation. If, however, you consistently attempt to subvert the dirty word filters to post obscene language, you are being a troll (and darned uncreative, at that). Buy a thesaurus.

The penalties for trollish behavior are as follows:

1st offense: A written warning from the Admins citing specific posts and asking politely that the behavior mentioned be modified.

2nd offense: A written warning as described above and a three-day suspension of posting privileges.

3rd offense: A written warning as described above and a one-week suspension.

4th offense: Banning.

NOTE: Banning is an absolute last resort. We have, in the history of the current set of Admins, banned only ONE poster. Usually, trolls get bored and leave before we have to get to that point. We are always willing to listen to your side of any argument, and will be more than happy to attempt to arbitrate any dispute when our time permits. However, a decision to ban by a majority of Admins will be final and without appeal. That's why you get so many chances to mend your ways before we get to that point.

Once the warning PM is sent, any subsequent suspension will go into effect within 8 hours. Refusing to open your PMs will not "stop the clock." You should have your account set to give you e-mail notifications when you get a PM, so "I didn't know it was there" is not an acceptable defense.

All of the above actions would, in a perfect world, be undertaken only after the Admins had conferred and come to a majority decision. Occasionally, it may be necessary for an Admin to act quickly to prevent further problems and issue a warning. However, their actions will always be open to review by the full Admin staff and this review will be taken VERY seriously. Abuse of power by an Admin will not be tolerated. Many boards across this marvellous place we call the Internet have deteriorated into fiefdoms run by one or two monomaniacal lunatics who ban people at a whim, and we will do everything humanly possible to avoid that fate.

IF you find yourself banned, you are of course free to return under another name in future. If you are found out, you will not be automatically re-banned unless your original banning was for violating Rule 1. Be prepared for your fellow board members to regard you with some measure of suspicion, but you will be held to no higher behavior standard than other members.
