Are you married/single?
Married.

What do you do to earn you a living?
Look cute? Um, I'm looking for a job. Financial systems, compliance stuff (like PCI), logistics, databases, data analysis, research, digital forensics, tech support, QA, development, embezzlement/fraud research, algorithmics ... MS in Computer Security ... the last few months I've been between contracts, so I'm acting as my own General Contractor for remodeling. Educational, but exhausting. I can't wait to be sitting on my butt in front of a computer again. I'm hoping to get away from 1099 and back into salaried world, because when I'm at a place long enough to learn the systems and business flows in my bones, then it's easier to pull off miracles.

What's you favorite movie?
I go to maybe one movie every few years. Hmmm. I liked The Incredibles.

Do you garden?
Yes, used to. Now we live in the middle of the woods, with a serious deer overopulation problem. So a garden will have to wait.

If so, do you compost?
I compost -- you don't need to garden to compost.

How many snow globes do you own?
None.

Do you own a thigh master?
Nope.

Dogs or Cats?
Cats. We foster-raise orphans. How many shall I put you down for?

What is the last CD you bought?
Big Medicine, by The R. Carlos Nakai Quartet. I already owned it, but had loaned it to a friend who lost it.

How many cookbooks do you own?
300+. They're generally my favorite thing to grab at a used book store. I keep forgetting to start hauling them back for exchange credit.

What's your favorite one?
Don't have a favorite. There are about 10 I use regularly, tho I tend to alter the recipes after the first time.

Last tool you purchased for your kitchen?
A new kitchen. See above comment on "General Contractor of my house remodel".

How long have you been watching GE?
Don't own a TV. I've seen bits and pieces of the show while at someone else's house. I was referred to this site by a friend who's also into cooking.

What’s your favorite episode?
See above. I've never seen an episode all the way through.

Favorite and least favorite AB recipes?
Haven't tried any yet. But I'm planning to.

Cookies: Flat, Chewy, or Puffy?
Chewy preferred, but it depends upon my mood.

Brine or no brine?
I've never brined, but I plan to soon to see what the fuss is about.

Is stuffing evil?
Depends.

Texas: never been or dying to go?
Lived there twice. Escaped intact. Gorgeous backcountry desert camping in the west. I'd love it if not for 90% of the Texans.

What do you consider BBQ/Barbeque?
Depends upon my mood.

Gas or charcoal?
Gas, usually. Charcoal sometimes.

Chile or chili?
Chile is a country, not a foodstuff.

Do you put beans in your chili?
Usually. Again, it depends.

What do you like to cook?
Varies. I go on kicks ... stir-fry variants for a week or so, then something from the Asian-Indian cookbooks for another week, then meat-and-mushrooms ...

Do you save your rendered bacon fat?
Usually not, although tonight I did for cornbread (that's the only reason I bought the bacon). I do almost zero cooking that requires bacon.

What is your libation preference (brand, too)?
A Cosmopolitan made by my husband: using Pomegranate/Black Cherry blended juice instead of cranberry

What's your favorite beer?
Ugh. Beer. Yuk.

Red or green Tabasco?
eh. Red, if I have to have Tabasco at all.

Cornbread: sugar or no?
I like it sweet, but not cake-muffin-sweet. A sweet corn can be sufficient if properly made. I haven't made or eaten this in years.

What is your favorite cheese?
Depends upon my mood. Usually an aged sharp cheddar. I'm not that much of an exotic-cheese fan. Ask my husband. If it's imported and unpronounceable, he probably loved it.

Butter or Margarine?
Butter. *Unsalted*

Do you like PIE or cake?
Cake, or Sweet Potato Pie

Bread: bake it or buy it?
Bake when I can, buy sometimes.

What is the number one food that gives you the willies?
Depends upon my mood. Okra.

My Inquisition

Postby Hallawe » Mon May 25, 2009 9:20 pm

Are you married/single?
Single

What do you do to earn you a living?
Full Time Student/Pharmacy Tech

What's you favorite movie?
Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings

Do you garden?
My mother forced me to while I was growing up; since then, no.

If so, do you compost?

How many snow globes do you own?
Two.

Do you own a thigh master?
No.

Dogs or Cats?
Cats.

What is the last CD you bought?
Mannheim Steamroller’s “Renaissance Holiday”

How many cookbooks do you own?
Twelve.

What's your favorite one?
Since I do not own any of Alton’s books, it is Where’s Mom now that I Need Her?

Last tool you purchased for your kitchen?
A three-quart, 18/10 stainless steel, oven-safe sauciér with lid, it should arrive by the end of the week (I can hardly wait!).

How long have you been watching GE?
The very first episode I saw, which must have been sometime in early high school, was “Choux Shine.” At the time I did not know who Alton Brown was or what “Good Eats” was, I just happened to catch it flipping through channels. The pate a choux sounded intriguing so I copied from the television furiously writing to keep up so I would not miss anything. I made the pate a choux and totally loved it but I did not remember the name of the show or cook who provided the recipe. I found Alton again while flipping through channels in my sophomore year of college (2006) and recognized him as the cook who showed me pate a choux. Since then I have been a “Good Eats” devotee.

What’s your favorite episode?
“Tender is the Loin” Parts I and II. Even though I can not often afford it, I love to cook tenderloin because it almost always turns out fantastic (and very impressive to your guests) no matter what one does to it.

Favorite and least favorite AB recipes?
Some of my favourites would have to be his yogurt, buffalo wings, stuffed tenderloin, and winter squash soup. I do not often dislike his recipes but I find his pie crust (from “The Crust Never Sleeps”) aggravating because I have never once gotten it to turn out right. I finally gave up and switched back to my old standby, the bride’s pastry. It never lets me down.

Cookies: Flat, Chewy, or Puffy?
Chewy would be my first choice but I like flat, too. Puffy, however, always tends to also be kind of crumbly. I have never cared for it.

Brine or no brine?
Definitely, brine. As Alton would say, it brings flavour to the party.

Is stuffing evil?
I agree with Alton that it is a good way to get yourself a trip to the ER with botulism but it is so good I can not bring myself to call it evil. I content myself with creating stuffings outside of the bird.

Texas: never been or dying to go?
Never been.

What do you consider BBQ/Barbeque?
Anything made on a grill. I am not and probably never will be a die-hard griller but I do know enough about grilling to know that simply having used a grill does not make me a “griller.”

Gas or charcoal?
Gas. Lighting charcoal is a pain and I am not enough of a purist to care.

Chile or chili?
Chili. Mmmmmm.

Do you put beans in your chili?
I am ashamed to admit that I have never actually made chili. My mother always puts beans in hers and it is pretty good but I have had it both ways and can not say that I have a strong preference to either.

What do you like to cook?
Cheesecake. At risk of sounding arrogant, my cheesecakes have become something of legend among my friends and co-workers.

Do you save your rendered bacon fat?
No.

What is your libation preference (brand, too)?
I do not drink so it has never come up.

What's your favorite beer?
Again, not applicable.

Red or green Tabasco?
Honestly, I have never tried green but I like the red stuff.

Cornbread: sugar or no?
Yes. My great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother (I was fortunate enough to be raised among three generations of amazing cooks) all made it with sugar. It may not be southern but it is definitely good eats (forgive me for pirating Alton’s catch phrase).

What is your favorite cheese?
One? I am supposed to pick just one? If I were tied down and forced to pick from the entire breadth of cheeses I have sampled, it would probably be a good smoked gouda. But it only very narrowly edges out the Loleta Cheese Factory’s Smoked Salmon Cheddar.

Butter or Margarine?
Both. I use butter for all my cooking and baking but I use margarine spread for toast and bagels and the like because butter is too difficult to spread well.

Do you like PIE or cake?
Since when did they become mutually exclusive? I like both. My favourite pie is a good, tart lemon meringue and my favourite cake is Alton’s butter cake.

Bread: bake it or buy it?
Both. I enjoy baking it but do not have the time to do so nearly as often as I would like.

What is the number one food that gives you the willies?
I will try almost anything once (including fire-roasted grasshoppers—not nearly as good as the natives claim and they definitely do NOT taste like chicken—and acorn mush—needs about a pound of salt) but the only food that I really and truly hate is raw carrots. I love carrots in things, especially stir fries, but I hate them raw.

Cats taste much better. Dogs leave a kinda bitter aftertaste.

How many cookbooks do you own?

Texas: never been or dying to go?

Both.

What do you consider BBQ/Barbeque?

(I'll wait while you go get a cool beverage and a snack...)
Well, growing up on the VA/NC line, I was scarred for life when I had one too many NC BBQ sandwiches (coleslaw, de riguer) with skin and porcine hair in it. I also didn't care for the vinegary 'sauce' that was universal in these parts. Then I got married and moved to Kansas By God City, Missouri, and discovered the nirvana of babachou. I was even bordering on vegetarianism until my new inlaws saved me from myself and introduced me to BEEF. Really good midwestern corn fed ANGUS BEEF. Mooing, juicy, hot in the center but flirting with e-coli poisoning BEEF!! I learned that BBQ was not just shredded pork swimming in runny vinegar with a few spices thrown in for color. BBQ could be yummy, hearty, thick, bold, beefy, and hairless! And not just BEEF, but poultry, venison, buffalo, and yes, occasionally pork too. It's like when you order a coke in the south, they ask you, "What KIND of coke?" Do you want Sprite, Co-Cola (thats Coke for you yankees), RC, Barq's, Cheerwine, you get the drift. You don't just order BBQ, you pick what type you want. Anyway, I'll refrain from listing all my favorite BBQ joints here, cuz I wouldn't want to take up too much space, k?

Gas or charcoal?

Sorry, gas is cleaner, faster, and I don't have to worry quite so much about blowing myself up. Almost.

Chile or chili?

Chili.

Do you put beans in your chili?

Well where else would you put them??

What do you like to cook?

Pretty much anything edible, altho, on occasion, I have been known to cook stuff that is inedible.

Do you save your rendered bacon fat?

Used to feed it to the dogs, kept their coats shiny.

What is your libation preference (brand, too)?

Cherry Dr. Pepper

What's your favorite beer?

Rootbeer.

Red or green Tabasco?

Chipotle, baby!!

Cornbread: sugar or no?

Boxed. Yeah, I'm a heathen.

What is your favorite cheese?

Free.

Butter or Margarine?

Land O' Lakes Sweet Cream Butter

Do you like PIE or cake?

Cake. cuz I'm a right-brain kinda girl.

Bread: bake it or buy it?

Buy it. I cook, I don't bake. again, with the right brain thing. too much measuring and counting in baking, bleh.

What is the number one food that gives you the willies?

Split Pea soup
I have a wooden spoon and I'm not afraid to use it!

/waves back/ Actually, I always read the replies. Gotta know how you make your chili. (I say that if there are beans, then by definition, it isn't chili but spiced meat with beans) Others care about the cornbread question. Some of the questions may be silly, but so are some of us members.
