Eggs-plosion!

Postby special1needs2cook » Thu Aug 19, 2010 9:10 am

I set three hard boiled eggs in cold water in a pot on the stove to boil (Eggland's Best, not on the recall list as of Aug. 18, 2010) and just a few minutes into the water heating one of the eggs exploded. Does anyone have any idea why that would happen? Was the egg bad? I set cold eggs in cold water, bring to a boil, turn heat off and let eggs continue to cook for 15 min. (Thanks to an Alton Brown tip).

Weird. I've had whites ooze out and set from cracks, but never "explode" (although it kinda looked like it.). Maybe a minute crack in the shell? Maybe a weak shell.

Very cold egg meeting rapidly heating water?

As Sadie said, I've had cracks, but never outright explosions.

Weird.

Bad eggs do contain a lot of gas, maybe it was off. Did it smell?
