Mrs. Evans' Welsh Currant Cookies

This recipe is from the wife of our minister, who passed it along to us about 1955. There is no reason to believe it was anywhere near new at the time.--tj

Cream:
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening (margarine)

Mix dry ingredients:
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 scant teaspoons baking powder

Mix wet ingredients:
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk

Alternate mixing wet and dry ingredients into creamed mixture
Add 1 cup dry currants

Roll dough out on floured board to about 1/4-3/8 inch thickness, cut with biscuit cutter
Bake cookies on a seasoned griddle, turning when edges are dry, as with pancakes.

They will be sort of mottled brown and dough color.
