QOTD 7/30: Join the cult!

Postby Chef Mongo » Mon Jul 30, 2012 6:33 am

Entertainment Weekly's cover story this week is about "cult" TV shows. I've been a fan of several of these over the years. How about you? What movie(s) or TV show (s) considered "cult" items do you love? Why?

There's really too many of these for me to count. The most recent examples would be "Fringe," and "Firefly/Serenity." Oh, and "Lost." And ... (see?)

I am VERY pleased to see the "Fringe" is being given a final season to finish telling the story. Fox appears to have learned from the "Firefly" debacle that canceling a show with an ardent following will earn you TONS of abuse and lost advertisers.

I didnt see the story, and I havent seen really ANY tv after 8pm in the past three years to speak of, but I caught, loved and really miss Heroes, even when I could see its downward spiral during the entire final season.

Any other sources for the new Sherlock besides Netflix and BBC?! We're jonesin' to see season 2!

I don't know exactly what shows are "cult" shows but I suspect I started back with Star Trek. Firefly, Doctor Who, Fringe, Stargate. Clearly, I have a thing for science fiction. I blame my dad who was a major Star Trek fan back when it started and I was a small child.

I've watched Firefly, Stargate and many others that
might have what's considered a cult following when
I happen to stumble on them when surfing, but the
only current franchises that I'd say I'm a FAN are
Steven Moffat's: Dr. Who and Sherlock. I'm a recently
converted Whovian, never really got into the 20th
Century version, and wasn't completely hooked until
Moffat took over. Sherlock had me from the beginning.

I like Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and David
Suchet's Poirot very much, too. When X-Files was
in production, I watched it religiously, but don't seem
to enjoy it as much now for some reason. :?

I was a charter member of the Star Trek cult. When
I was a freshman at Johns Hopkins (1967-'68), I had
the only TV in my dorm, so my room was always packed
on Friday nights with nerds, many of whom have gone
on to become scientists and engineers, including Mike
Griffin who was NASA administrator.

Without looking, I'm 99% confident that none of the stuff I enjoy watching would be on that list. And I'm ok with that. :D
I'm impressed ... and happy. Not "surprised" ... but happy.

This pretty much covers it for me, too.

I really haven't found a good one since MST3K & the Star Trek shows ended.

Now I watch *way* too many cartoons:

Regular Show, Adventure Time, Spongebob, Fairly Oddparents, Total Drama, etc.

I've seen a couple of those vampire shows, (not by choice, I was a guest.) and I have to say, NO THANK YOU. Disguising "almost-porn" behind a half-assed story? Not my thing.

Pass.

Guess I don't *have* an answer, but *boy* didn't I take up some space not having an answer?? lol.
