What one invention are you most impressed by? Which one do you consider most important?

I believe the standard answer to this one is: The thermos bottle.

Me.

I mean, c'mon.

(I was sure today's question was going to me about sausage, pate, or other antipasti to go with our cheese and crackers.)

The flush toilet.

Why do I love British tv so much? I just watched a popular new documentary that aired on British tv about the history of the toilet. Yes, that kind of thing is aired during prime time and people watch it. While America is watching those frickin' Kardashians. And you wonder why the rest if the world hates us. Anyway, the flush toilet drug us out of the dark ages in more ways than one. In the sanitation aspect alone it is unrivaled, not to mention the smell. Imagine if our cities still had trenches running down the streets for us to dump our uncovered waste in. Or we had to hover over the poop holes in our castle while the cold draft from the moat blew up our backsides.

I think the best invention has been the internet and computers!

I'm not so sure about the invention of flush toilets! If you think about it....years ago when you wanted to go to the loo...you went down the bottom of the garden and used a hut that was suspended over a large pit. This when full was then covered over with soil and a new one dug! The Rhubarb was grown over that spot many years later! Now we have a toilet in the house...together with all it's associated 'smells' for which we squirt air freshener and flush bleach down at regular intervals. I'm not sure it is doing the environment any good! Oh and to add to that...the stuff gets flushed out to sea..... :wall:

Still the printing press. Gutenberg FTW!

The internet has certainly changed my life. I am definitely grateful for flush toilets.

However, I couldn't see to do anything at all if not for my glasses/contacts.

What one invention are you most impressed by?

The Atomic Bomb / Manhattan project. Dammit.
It would have been so easy for those guys to
not be quite so group genius.

Honorable Mention:
Wright Flyer, they succeeded on a shoestring,
when many teams of well financed professional
engineers failed;
Television (Philo_Farnsworth) Same reason.

Which one do you consider most important?

Electronics: The inventions of Telegraph, Telephone,
Radio, Televison, Computers, etc. built on each
other. I think it's impossible to say any one
"break thru" was most important.

Key inventors / contributors included: S.F.B. Morse,
A. G. Bell, Edison, Tesla, Einstein, Farnsworth, Alan
Turing...

Fire, The Wheel, Printing Press, Engines (steam,
combustion, jet, rocket) were all biggies too.
